Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli, un respetado erudito del arte romano y uno de los padres fundadores de la arqueología moderna es un antifascista implacable. Los problemas llegan cuando, con motivo del famoso viaje de Hitler a Italia en 1938, a Bandinelli lo invitan amablemente a acompañar a Mussolini y al Führer como su guía turístico e intérprete en los museos y lugares arqueológicos. Cuando la cortés invitación se transforma en una orden que no puede rechazar, solo tiene una posibilidad. Sin embargo, una vez que lo han persuadido, se da cuenta de que nadie lo controla, tiene via libre para decidir cuándo y dónde realiza las visitas guiadas. Durante cuatro días estará cara a cara con los dos villanos. La historia le ofrece una oportunidad: podría acabar con ellos, acabar con su locura, asesirnarlos. A pesar de ser una persona tranquila y pacífica, el profesor no solo baraja la posibilidad, sino que empieza a elaborar un plan. Roma en pleno ferragosto (vacaciones de agosto) es una ciudad desierta. Bruno Cortona, un cuarentón fanfarrón y locuaz, conduciendo su vehículo deportivo descapotable, recorre la ciudad en busca de un paquete de cigarrillos y de un teléfono. Se detiene a beber agua de un grifo y divisa a un solitario joven que lo observa. Después de un corto diálogo, el joven, llamado Roberto Mariani, lo invita a su apartamento para que haga su llamada telefónica. Cortona se entera de que el joven se ha quedado en Roma para preparar sus exámenes. La locuacidad de Cortona lo convence de acompañarlo en su viaje por unos días. Comienza así un trayecto a alta velocidad, lleno de episodios audaces y exóticos por las carreteras italianas. El joven estudiante comienza a arrepentirse de su decisión, pero al mismo tiempo está fascinado por Bruno Cortona y su forma de tomar la vida, hasta que, cuando finalmente comienza a disfrutar de una vida relajada y superficial, ocurre un accidente.

Para retroceder hasta donde empezó a perder esperanzas en su fe, Pressburguer investiga los miedos de la infancia, las mentiras de la edad adulta, la iluminación de la Gracia. A pesar de su prometedora carrera de escritor, Ryota va de desilusión en desilusión. Se ha divorciado de Kyoko y gasta todo el dinero que gana como detective privado apostando en las carreras, por lo que finalmente no puede pagar la pensión alimentaria de su hijo de 11 años, Shingo. Ahora Ryota intenta ganarse nuevamente la confianza de sus seres queridos y formar parte de la vida de su hijo.
