En su primer largo metraje Delbert Mann ganó con este film 4 oscares de 8 a los que estuvo nominado y los principales: Mejor Dirección. Mejor Guión, Mejor actor (Borgnine) y Mejor película del año 1955. Además, Borgnine ganó el Globo de Oro como mejor actor y en los BAFTA ganó también ese premio como mejor actor y Betsy Blair como mejor actriz. Y como si fuera poco esta película ganó el premio a la mejor en el Festival de Cannes 1955.
